Welcome to the Fall 2018 Edition of The Clarity Post™. This is always a favorite time of year for us here in Chicago, when the heat and humidity of summer yields to the crisp and refreshing sights and sounds of fall. While seasons change, the work of continuously enhancing patient safety and healthcare quality remains central to our work and that of our healthcare clients.
As always we remain committed to bringing you resources and education relevant to the real and emerging risk-quality-safety issues facing healthcare providers today. In this issue we highlight both the continued risks to quality care, and the ways to address those risks with personal and innovative strategies. Our Hot Topic is Home Care. As a rapidly emerging setting where care is delivered and monitored, special considerations must be given to how to address Risk-Quality-Safety outside the framework of a hospital setting while at the same time realizing its benefits. Our goal is to keep focused awareness on addressing gaps and risks in care delivery even as the concentric circles of how that care is delivered expand.
We appreciate you spending some time with us, and we hope you find this latest edition helpful and informative.

THE IMPACT OF EMPLOYEE VOICE ON PATIENT SAFETY...AND HOW TO EMPOWER IT
Researchers from University of Cambridge and Johns Hopkins Medicine recently published a case study that examines the impact of employee voice in healthcare organizations, and what factors often prevent employees from raising issues or complaints about hazardous conditions or troublesome behaviors involving co-workers. The study has broad implications for healthcare organizational safety and reporting strategies. The journal Academic Medicine has more.
Healthcare Growth Partners recently published their review on the state of cybersecurity in healthcare. In some ways there is reason to be hopeful, with notable positive trends and increasing investment in technologies focused on healthcare cybersecurity specifically, but the primary takeaway is just how big of a priority this must continue to be.
A recent IHI report, No Place Like Home, Advancing the Safety of Care in the Home, takes a look at the home care arena and how it can be viewed from a healthcare risk management perspective. The report includes tools and strategies for making the home care delivery setting safer.
Expanding on the issues of Risk, Quality and Safety Management in the home healthcare setting, we invite you to read Clarity Group’s latest White Paper. In it we explore how to approach the creation of the Healthcare Risk Management Program for home healthcare services, whether owned by the healthcare system or contracted for by the hospital.
